Hodgkinson was shot by Capitol Police on the scene after allegedly opening fire and wounded Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., and three others. He died after officers in Scalise's security detail and local police fired at him.
In March, Sheriff's deputies came out to Hodgkinson's house in IL after a neighbor reported hearing 50 gunshots.
Sue Hodgkinson says she can't explain the actions of her estranged husband, James T. Hodgkinson. The paper's staff then kicked into overdrive, dredging up archival letters Hodgkinson had written to the paper, photographs of him at local protests over the year, delving into criminal records and family relations and speaking to anyone who knew him.
"I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign", said a statement from the former Democratic presidential hopeful.
"Looking back with 20/20 hindsight, I can see how the guy was troubled, but at the time I thought he was working", Brennwald said.
When asked why he left and why he went to the Washington D.C. area specifically, Hodgkinson said her husband wanted to "work on taxes" with government officials, with a goal of changing the tax brackets.
In late March, days before Hodgkinson left town, Bill Schaumleffel called the St. Clair Sheriff's Office to complain about Hodgkinson firing his rifle toward houses when his grandchildren were outside.
The charges were eventually dismissed, but witnesses told deputies Hodgkinson grabbed the girl by the hair and threw her on the floor.
"He was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Sava said.
Sava said that after being released from the hospital, Scalise would "require a period of healing and rehabilitation".
Trump made an unannounced visit - with first lady Melania Trump and White House physician Ronny Jackson - to the hospital late Wednesday after Scalise's first surgery.
Matt Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods, is also in critical condition.
Hodgkinson was found to have had a handgun and 7.62-caliber rifle that both were purchased by licensed sellers, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in an update Thursday. "Other than that, the state can't take it away". But no matter what authorities discover about Hodgkinson (and he appears to have had other troubles in his life), Wednesday's attack should cause a gut check about what passes for political discourse in this country.
