Spieth storms into early lead at Travelers Championship

Posted June 23, 2017

His nine career tour wins include the 2015 Masters and U.S. Open along with the Tour Championship.

With a full field of 156 players teeing off in threesomes off Nos. Purse: $6.8 million (First place: $1,224,000).

Rory McIlroy returned to action last week at the U.S. Open, and was understandably a little rusty.

"It is obviously unbelievable to come back to a place where you've won", said Knox, who posted a 14-under-par 266 aggregate to finish a shot ahead of Jerry Kelly as he added this title to his WGC-HSBC Champions victory in China the previous year.

In all, there are 13 major championship winners accounting for 24 majors on the grounds.

CROMWELL Jason Day is a little behind schedule, but he has plenty of time left to make that up, beginning this week at the Travelers Championship. He has improved his finishes over the last four weeks, including a 27-place finish in the U.S. Open.

Savannah native Brian Harman, coming off a tie for second in the U.S. Open, will also be in the field.

Wade Ormsby (64) took the overnight lead from Thomas Detry (65), and Joost Luiten and Thorbjorn Olesen (66) were tied for third with Garcia. After the second round, he joked he simply was trying to stay out of playing partner McIlroy's way, which he said he found easy considering how often his shots were off line. The 16th hole is a par-3 over the lake to a two-tiered green that has its fair share of trouble with an inaccurate tee shot.

"I love the back nine, I think it's one of the coolest stretches that we play, where anything can happen".

Big names Rory McIlroy, Keegan Bradley and Jim Furyk are in at three-under. "I can see why Jim Furyk (shot) 58 a year ago and why guys can go so low", McIlroy said Wednesday.

Jordan Spieth made a near-flawless start in his debut appearance at the Travelers Championship as the former world number one earned a one-stroke lead, while Jason Day struggled. Finau has a pair of T25s here at TPC River Highlands and has seven of eight rounds under par (the other being an even 70).

Jordan Spieth didn't take long to figure out TPC River Highlands.

"Also, I just feel much better about my game out there than I did at Erin Hills and I do feel a lot more comfortable in these surrounds as it is tree lined and there is course definition, so you can visualise your shots better". They are capable of shooting unbelievable scores. "The course changes significantly as the day goes on, particularly the firmness of the greens, and I think players like that". At the time, Johnson, McIlroy and Day were top three players in the world rankings, and it marked the first time the world's top three missed the cut in a major since the world rankings were established in 1986.

"You're not going to shoot seven-under every round, it's impossible and I recognise that, so it's about waiting for my chances to come in the same way we did today".
