76ers take Fultz, Lakers grab Ball to start NBA draft

Posted June 24, 2017

Guard Markelle Fultz heard his name called at the beginning of the 2017 NBA Draft Thursday night, becoming the newest member of the Philadelphia 76ers.

- Markelle Fultz was once cut from the varsity team in high school and now he is the No. 1 overall pick in the National Basketball Association draft.

Philadelphia selected Jonah Bolden, a much-traveled 21-year-old, with their first pick in the second round and 36th pick overall.

The Philadelphia 76ers began a trend in the 2017 NBA Draft by drafting prolific freshman guard Markelle Fultz.

It came in an Instagram post sponsored by a watch company. Or rather, The Process.

Winner: Arizona. Furthered its reputation as pipeline to the National Basketball Association by producing its fifth first-round pick (Lauri Markkanen) in the past five years.

Lonzo Ball and his dad are staying home with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Timberwolves also acquired a new center with the 16th pick in the draft in Justin Patton out of Creighton University. Fultz led the Pac-12 in scoring, finished No. 6 among all Division I players, and was the top freshman scorer in the country. "Today is a good day".

"Please dunk on him so hard that his daddy runs on the court to save him", Embiid tweeted in reference to Ball's father, LaVar, who does most of the talking off the court for his son. Fultz and Simmons will both be rookies this season and you can only imagine the two having even better rookie campaigns than Dario and Joel did.

Hart was the only senior drafted in the first round, and most observers think the Lakers got an NBA-ready talent in the former national champion.

"It's been a while", team president Bryan Colangelo said, pointing toward championship banners hanging in the team's New Jersey complex. It probably makes sense for Simmons to be the primary ball handler because he looks to pass first. "They're all supportive, and like I said, I'm just truly blessed to be in this position".

"Get up and down", Fultz said recently of the Sixers' style of play. Monk, who averaged 19.8 points in his only season at Kentucky, went at No. 11 to the Charlotte Hornets.

It was Jones who sent an undersized Fultz to the Stags' junior varsity squad during his sophomore year, a move that lit the fire of competitiveness in the future No. 1 pick of the NBA Draft.

No worries, for now.

Duke had two players in the top 14, and nobody else placed more than one. "We've all been around NBA basketball for a while now and I think that if that could happen, that's incredible".

American Terrance Ferguson, who played for the Adelaide 36ers in the ANBL last season, was drafted to the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 21st pick of the first round.

Remember, these players are "one and done" guys.

It's the fourth time in franchise history that the team has had the overall No. 1 pick. "So I think it is perhaps ammunition at times to remind them of statements and to help them achieve their in-game goal".

However, Brooklyn traded away their picks which is why Philadelphia got to choose first.

He joins a young squad that features Australian forward Ben Simmons, another top draft pick who missed all of last season with a foot injury; Jahlil Okafor and 2017 National Basketball Association rookie of the year finalists Joel Embiid and Dario Saric.

But when they do, they could be the final pieces for a contender.
