Seahawks' late TD drive enough to beat 49ers

Posted September 18, 2017

That's good news for a Seahawks running game that totaled just totaled just 90 yards last week, just 53 coming from running backs.

Blair Walsh added field goals of 25 and 27 yards, but missed the extra point after Richardson's TD that could have given the Seahawks a four-point lead. He was 23 of 39 passing for 198 yards. Matt Breida also had two impressive runs, gaining 11 and 13 yards on back-to-back carries on San Francisco's final scoring drive. Seattle should be extremely confident given their dominance in this matchup and the homefield advantage they will have.

"Ugly as hell. Very ugly".

"We'll see how that fits together", Carroll said.

All in all, the Seahawks offense will need to find a way to score if they want to see double-digit wins and a spot in the NFC Championship game in January.

Seattle has now beaten San Francisco in seven consecutive meetings. Paul Richardson caught it in his chest while getting both feet down, and Seattle had its first touchdown this season. The 49ers will undoubtedly try to get in as many 3rd and 4 or less situations as they can.

Thankfully Seattle was playing an equally - and as it turns out, more so - inept 49ers offense.

Here is a fantasy breakdown for the three Seattle running backs. With Eddie Lacy on the sideline after being declared a healthy scratch, Carson got the majority of the work for the second straight week. This year has already seen him run more, as he ran twice for 40 yards in Week 1 and 12 times for 34 yards Sunday against the 49ers.

Reuben Foster managed to avoid a major injury during the first quarter of the season opener against the Panthers but sustained a high-ankle sprain, he remains sidelined for Sunday's game.

The Seahawks clearly like Rawls over Lacy as the lead back, and Carson had a few impressive runs against Green Bay last Sunday. "The running game was something you could be excited about - Carlos popping some big runs, the offensive line doing a good job". It was the longest run allowed by Seattle's defense in the regular season since 2012. They harrassed Aaron Rodgers in his building, and held the Packers to just 84 yards on 28 rushing attempts. Even 800 now looks unattainable. Graham was targeted only two times. Wilson was harassed all game against the Packers and was sacked three times. He has 9 yards receiving on the season.

"He's really downhill at you", Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said of Carson. San Francisco benched G Zane Beadles and replaced him with recent trade acquisition Laken Tomlinson in the starting offense. Russell Wilson completed 14 of 27 passes for 158 yards. With the inexperience along the offensive line it might be smarter to just to make the entire offensive scheme as simple as possible so the players can just go out and play without having to overthink everything.

" ... I think we've got something there". If San Francisco can cause similar disruption after failing to register a sack against Carolina, then the Niners will have a genuine chance and concern for Seattle's O-Line will grow.

Seattle also extended its win streak in home openers to nine. Things won't get any easier for San Francisco as they take on a solid Seahawks defense in game two.
