Here's how to buy Nintendo's SNES Classic on launch day

Posted September 30, 2017

Much like Nintendo's Classic Editions, the real draw of the C64 Mini is its pre-installed library of classic Commodore titles. In other words: You can use an SNES Classic Controller to play games on an NES Classic, and you can play SNES Classic games with with an NES Classic Controller. And furthermore, just because there's an online store, that doesn't mean people wouldn't go nuts for an affordably priced bit of hardware that just gives them their favorite games. While the device's official website suggests you can pre-order one now, trying to do so takes you to a store page that reads "Coming Soon". But whether you'll be able to find it in stores is unclear. The games hold up, and that couldn't be more true with the Super NES Classic Edition. Some gamers spent months trying to get their hands on a Nintendo Switch and that was far less limited than these trendy retro consoles.

Technically the full name of it is the "Nintendo Classic Mini Super Nintendo Entertainment System" but we're calling it the SNES Classic Mini for short. It did look like Walmart may be the first United States retailer to take pre-orders when it's pre-orders site went live and started taking orders, over two weeks ago. Keep in mind Walmarts opened earlier in the day, most at 6am, so they're bound to be pretty picked over. At midday Friday, many online retailers were already sold out. For its part, Nintendo said it has dramatically increased SNES Classic Edition production, though it failed to confirm just how many it made.

Today, however, things seem to be going well.

A report on Polygon read, "Today's pattern seems clear: While the online pre-order meltdown was stressful, frustrating and seemed nearly actively hostile, the retail experience was anything but".
