But if it's multi-room Spotify across a load of old speakers or Home devices you're after, then a combination of ChromeCast Audios and a Home Mini could be a better choice. The Google Home Max ($399) is a higher-end speaker with the company's built-in Google Assistant technology.
Mini is a small device with no corners or edges, about the size of a donut. The LEDs under the fabric light up to show you when your Assistant hears you. According to the livestream, it's run by touch and offers 360-degree sound.
The Google Home Mini comes in Coral, Chalk, and Charcoal colour options. Both of them can play music from major streaming services, set alarms and timers, give you sports scores, and control your smart lightbulbs and other "connected" appliances. But, with the Home Max, Google include Smart Sound, a dynamic way of analysing your room and ambient sound, to adjust the volume and sound quality to match your environment. The Home Max can customize its audio settings based on the device's space.
The voice assistant battle, which is playing out through the new hardware, is just one front in a wider war between Amazon and Google. It's a stereo speaker with two 4.5-inch woofers and a couple of tweeters flanking them for much-improved bass performance. Soon your Assistant will be even more helpful with your daily routines. Its battery should last about three hours, and the LED lights let you know when it's recording. It supposedly does so so quickly that you can move it around and it'll adapt dynamically. Not to mention, for a limited time, Pixel 2 preorders will come with a free Google Home Mini. The standard Google Home speaker costs nearly $130. Learn something new, or imagine with storytime.
The point is, it's tiny, and it embodies a lot of the larger Google Home's aesthetic.
AI was a big focus of Google's presentation, with the company talking about how its Assistant could seamlessly weave together different aspects of a person's life. An iPhone can still be found via Home, but it's just a phone call. A user would simply have to hold down on the right earbud and say something like "Help me speak French".
You can pre-order the speakers and both phones now by using a United Kingdom or U.S. address starting. You can pre-order yours online today at the Google Store, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Verizon and more. It is available for pre-orders from Wednesday itself in Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the US.
The partnership was first announced in August and went live on October 4, with more than 2 million items on Walmart.com becoming available through voice.
